It been pretty well established that there is a link between oral and whole body (systemic) health. There are correlations between periodontal disease and increased severity and incidence for stroke, cardiovascular disease and pre-mature births. Some authors have claimed that periodontal disease is a greater risk factor for cardiovascular disease than smoking.
It appears that bacterial, inflammatory and other immunologic products leach into the blood stream from sites of oral disease. These agents then exert their influence on systemic health.
Good oral health is part of a heart healthy life style. Routine semi-annual dental visits (i.e. dental exam and cleanings) along with good daily home care should be part of your preventive maintenance health program.
